I had these thoughts the other morning on one of my runs. It is fitting for Satan to be defined as a serpent in Genesis. See, I am by no means a snake lover. In fact I am the farthest thing from it. Why, you ask? I have a fear of snakes for the following reasons:
1. Snakes hide in the natural environment
2. Snakes are made to disguise themselves as things they are not
3. Snakes do not warn you (for the most part) if they are going to strike
4. Snakes will come out of hiding to warm themselves by the sun even if it will kill them
5. I can’t tell the difference between a snake and a stick in the early morning hours
As I ponder these thoughts, it became apparent why Satan is portrayed as a serpent. He is the “Father of evil.”
Think about my list:
1. Sin hides in the my own environment
2. Sin disguises itself as things around us
3. Sin does not warn you because it’s goal is to destroy you
4. Sin is like a suicide bomber, it doesn’t care who gets injured.
5. Sin looks like a simple object seen as an every day thing, when in fact it is something dangerous lurking to strike when you are least prepared
So what does this mean? Well, for one thing I am going to run around all the sticks I see in the morning just in case. As for the spiritual side, I am going to make sure I am ready to recognize sin for what it is and not be blind-sided by something disguised as Godly so that I can be prepared each day for what the enemy will use against me to negatively affect the kingdom of God.
